There are some very iconic and legendary car livery in the automotive world. Once we see these livery, there will be a thick motorsport aura enveloping it. Moreover, most of this livery is indeed derived from the classic 70-80s. A span of time which is a very charming era of motorsport.
“When sex is safe and racing is dangerous”.
This quote from Jackie Stewart illustrates how thrilling a car race was at that time. In the past sex was much safer, in the sense of being safe from AIDS and other STD diseases. Calm down, don’t worry, no need to think long. Racing on the other hand, is very dangerous and high risk! Full of worry and gripping! 180 degrees different from the present. Sex is far more dangerous and risky and racing is much safer.
Technology and safety in motorsport is not as sophisticated and ‘comfortable’ as it is today. Guts and skill battles really determine the high-speed drama that is very stressful! The circuit becomes like a colloseum where racers as gladiators whose lives are at stake between victory and death.
Then what is the relationship with the livery that we will discuss?
The charm of the motorsport history is inherent in these livery. There is an aura of racing and a bond between “Man and Machine” that is thick every time we look at it.
Well, let’s start. The coffee is ready, right? hehe
Who would have thought that the combination of sky blue and orange would be one of the world’s best livery!
Gulf livery is a legendary livery. We certainly are familiar once we see it. This livery is synonymous with Le Mans. Gulf livery is a livery used by Ford GT40 when subverting the dominance of Ferrari at Le Mans.
In 1960, Ferrari dominated the Lemans 24 hour endurance racing championship. Just imagine, Ferarri has been the winner in a row for 6 years from 1960 to 1965! Ford GT40 with gulf livery then successfully defeated Ferrari and won Le Mans. Not just once, but 4 years in a row from 1966-1969!
The popularity of the gulf livery was then continued through the Porsche 917 at Le Mans in 1970 and 1971. In 1971 also appeared the legendary film, Le Mans, starring superstar, Steve McQueen. This film not only raised the name of Le Mans in the eyes of the world, but also the Porsche 917 gulf used in the film.
The Porsche 917 gulf used by Steve McQueen is the most expensive Porsche in the world. Just imagine, this car was auctioned at a price of 14 million dollars. If converted to rupiah around 198 billion rupiah!
The series of history and achievements inherent in the gulf livery makes this car livery very iconic. Gulf livery then remains used in various other types of racing cars. Call it like a Porsche 908, Mirage race car, Mclaren F1 GTR, Aston Martin Vantage, and Audi R8.
One more thing that is not less cool, though still in the form of rendering, is the Aventador Liberty Walk with gulf livery. Can be seen here .
Gulf itself is a British oil company which then merged with Standard Oil into an American company. In Indonesia, some of our products can be found in the form of car oil or motorcycle oil.
Hearing the word Martini, in our minds we must imagine Lancia cars that are skilled in the 80s rally. If Gulf is identical to Le Mans, then the livery martini is indeed very identical to the rally.
But make no mistake. Previously, Porsche who used livery Martini had competed at Le Mans and won several times this prestigious prestige championship. Martini Racing won the Le Mans 1971, 1976 and 1977. In 1971 Le Mans, the Porsche 917 Gulf was runner up and the Porsche 917 Martini was the champion.
It was only when the 80s, Martini docked and supported compatriot car manufacturer, Lancia.
The combination of this Italian duo is truly amazing. Various achievements were made that made Lancia as one of the most successful producers in the world rally championship!
Livery dark blue, light blue and red lines inherent in the Lancia monsters then became part of the history of the rally that can not be released. That’s why remember Lancia, remember Martini. Remember Martini, remember Lancia.
Various victories and championships were achieved through cars such as Lancia 037, Delta S4, and Delta Integrale. Martini Lancia won the WRC Drivers tittle in 1987, 1988, 1989, and 1991. They also won the Constructors Tittle in 1983, 1987 to 1992.
Not only from the achievements, but these cars have the charm of the appearance and also the value of their respective history. Call it like the Lancia Delta S4 which first used the world’s first twincharger system with power that penetrates 1000 hp! This car also became a historic car after closing Group B which is a legendary world rally group.
In addition to the rally and Le Mans, Martini is also a sponsor for several other racing championships such as the touring championship and F1.
Hearing Rothmans who is a British cigarette manufacturer will remind us of the legendary Porsche race car.
There are two cars that make this car livery so popular. Porsche 956 and Porsche 962. Both are actually the same car. 962 is a development or some updates from 956.
This car was one of the best iron horses of its time. Various victories led to the title of one of the most successful racing cars of all time! At the beginning of its debut in its production year, 1982, the Porsche 956 was already rampant. This car won the Le Mans 24h immediately! Not only that, the 2nd and 3rd place winners are 956!
Another madness of the 956 is that this car is the fastest lap record holder in the Nürburgring for 35 years! Once again, for 35 years! This record was created in 1983 and remains the fastest lap for three centuries and a half later. Sadistic! You can imagine how fast this car sped.
Porsche developed 956 to 962 in 1985. This was done so that 956 could meet the IMSA GT championship requirements. 962 it remains a victory-hungry monster. Various championships brushed out which makes it a very dominating car in the 80s.
Even in the mid-90s, this car that could be called an “old horse” was still able to compete and win! 10 years after being created, in 1994 the Porsche 962 won the Le Mans championship for the third time.
Want to know what are the full prestige wins that have been won by this legendary car? The following are:
- World Sportscar Championship in 1985 and 1986.
- IMSA GT Championship four times in a row from 1985 to 1988.
- All Japan Sports Prototype Championship five times in a row from 1985 to 1989.
- Supercup Series four times in a row from 1986 to 1989.
- The Interserie Championship six times in a row from 1987 to 1992.
- Le Mans three times namely 1986, 1987 and 1994
No wonder then the Rothmans livery which is identical to the Porsche 956/962 became one of the iconic and thick livery with the scent of victory.
We’ve been talking about Le Mans, GT, and rally cars. Now it’s Formula 1’s turn.
What is the most iconic Livery of Formula 1? The answer might be several. But it’s hard to deny this one livery.
This car livery becomes a livery that reminds us of the golden age of Formula 1 in the ’80s. A time when Formula 1 was a risky land jet race and motorsport drama! The competition between racers when it really collided skill and guts. Of course, for those of you who have experienced the old age, you must have seen a poster of a F1 car carton with Marlboro livery.
There are various memories of Formula 1 history that are thick with this livery. Marlboro F1 Livery has been attached since 1974 in the cars of F1 legends. Various victories have been achieved such as James Hunt (1976), Niki Lauda (1984), Alain Prost (85, 86, 89), and Ayrton Senna (88, 90, 91). Not to mention the modern F1 of the 2000s in the hands of legendary racer Michael Schumacher (2000-2004).
The most famous car of this car livery is Mclaren MP4 / 4. Currently Mclaren is hanging, but this car was untouched in the hands of Senna and Prost. Mclaren MP4 / 4 is the most dominant car in the history of Formula 1. Just imagine, the car won 15 of 16 matches at the 1988 Formula 1 championship!
Two popular Formula 1 films then reinforced how this Marlboro livery was indeed an icon of Formula 1. The film ‘ Rush ‘ which tells the drama of competition James Hunt and Niki Lauda, and the documentary film ‘Senna’ tells the legend of Ayrton Senna who is often referred to as the best racer F1 of all time.
Marlboro actually still continues to sponsor F1 cars. Currently the cigarette brand of Philip Morris is a sponsor of the Scuderia Ferrari team.
But how come the marlin dashboard doesn’t look like it used to be?
Formula 1 has banned cigarette advertising in any form since 2007. Especially in the form of a car livery hehe.
The combination of orange and green colors is certainly very striking and different. The color combination will remind us of a legendary car with a very distinctive sound. Mazda 787B is one of the legendary racing cars of all time with various uniqueness.
His voice is certainly no stranger to enthusiasts. The roar of the triple rotor from the rotary engine has made this car often referred to as the car with the most beautiful sound! Hearing his voice from the video alone is already making solemn let alone hear directly, speechless …
Although rotary is known as a machine that is ‘spoiled’ or less reliable. The 787B won the Le Mans prestigious championship in 1991. The damage suffered by this car when it was just a headlight bulb that exploded.
This achievement is also an extraordinary record. Why? Because only then did a Japanese car win the Le Mans, which was dominated by European cars. The 787B wrapped in Renown’s livery successfully defeated the Le Mans giants such as Porsche, Mercedes Benz and Jaguar!
Until after a long time, namely 27 years later, in 2018 Toyota won the Le Mans with the Toyota TS050 Hybrid Toyota TS050 Hybrid .
Maybe not many people know about Renown. Yes, right?
Renown is a Japanese manufacturing company that sells and supplies boutique clothing and retail clothing brands.
