Engine List for Engine Swap in Toyota Cars

This time we will discuss about swap engines on Toyota cars. For Honda car brands can be seen here . While other brands will follow we review (queuing hehe).

This review will contain the understanding of swap engines in general and also the machines that are commonly used along with the engine specifications. In addition, we will provide information on what cars the engine can be used for, which of course are cars circulating in Indonesia.

The engine swaps in this review do not include cross-brand engine swaps with the consideration that most people want their cars to still have the same ‘DNA’. I compiled this list from cyberspace searches haha, namely articles, domestic and foreign car community forums, Youtube and others. For further information regarding the details of the engine swap process, the required budget and other details, please just google it. Or practically, please consult with the nearest swap engine workshop hehe.

What is Swap Engine?

In translation, swap engine means swapping machines. This term is used when we are going to replace the entire engine of our car with another car engine. The entire engine is often a package with replacement (transmission) gearbox, ECU, and of course the wiring. In some cases, especially when switching to an engine with a higher power capacity, the engine swap also spreads to the replacement of the legs and brakes (so if you’re speeding it won’t hurt haha). There is also a swap that requires changes/replacements to the gas pump, exhaust, radiator (cooling system), clutch, and others.

Usually the engine swap is preferred to be done between the same car brand and still in the same engine family. For example, on a Honda Ferio car with another Honda engine, or a Toyota Starlet with a 2E engine with a Toyota Starlet GT Turbo engine with a 4E-FTE engine which is still in the same engine family, the Toyota E Engine.

Swap engines in one brand and engine family is done to facilitate the engine swap process because the two cars generally have several similarities such as the drive system (layout), engine mounting, gearbox and others. Swapping engines across brands or across engine families is not impossible, but requires a high level of mechanical knowledge and high costs. In addition, most people do not want to replace the ‘DNA’ of their car with another brand of car, for example a BMW E36 with a Toyota 2JZ engine.

Swap Engine Purpose

Almost all of those who do engine replacements aim to modify the car into a car with top engine performance, aka speeding, both on the streets and on the circuit track. Engine swaps are also carried out if we want to have a fast car with a limited budget, for example, if we have a budget to buy a Toyota Vios (80-120 million) but choose to buy a Toyota Corolla DX (20-25 million) then the rest of the budget is allocated to replace the engine to 4AGE Blacktop. This is also known as building a Sleeper car, which is a car with a standard or old appearance but secretly has a frightening engine.

Toyota Corolla DX (KE70)

This old Toyota car has a classic or retro style that makes it much in demand to be maintained and of course in its engine swap. DX has a fairly spacious engine room and rear wheel drive (RWD) layout which makes this car has many engine options for engine swaps. This is because large-powered machines generally have a RWD or AWD layout and are large in size. In addition, the price of the DX is quite cheap, thus increasing the popularity of this car in the world of engine swaps.

Toyota Cressida

Cressida is well known for its reputation for making sleeper cars, namely cars whose appearance is ‘deliberately’ made standard but secretly the engine has been replaced so that it surprisingly has a large power alias can run out. The swap engine that is quite popular in this car is the Toyota Supra Mk.4 engine, the 2JZ-GTE which has enormous power potential. Some of his projects are often found in forums, articles or Youtube.

Toyota Crown

Known for its reputation as a luxury car in its time, Toyota Crown modifications after replacing the engine are usually more of a classic or elegant VIP style.

Toyota Twincam (Corolla AE92)

This car engine swap is usually still in the same engine family, namely the A engine family.

Toyota Great Corolla (AE101)

This car engine swap is usually still in the same engine family, namely the A engine family. However, there have been several people who have succeeded in inserting the Toyota Celica GT-4 (3S-GTE) engine, but it is certain that the level of difficulty will be greater, compared to swapping machines that are still one family.

Toyota Soluna

The engine swap option in this car is a bit tricky. However, based on information from a local car community, there have been two people who swapped their Soluna to the 4A-GE Blacktop.

Toyota All New Corolla (AE111)

This car is quite easy to swap to the Toyota Altis engine, namely 1ZZ-FE, because the all new American market variant is equipped with a 1ZZ engine. Although the increase in power is not large, the potential power of the 1ZZ is better than the original 4A-FE engine. In the outside car community, such as Toyotanation, this car has even been successfully swapped with the 2ZZ-FE which has even better power.

Toyota Corona Absolute

The car, known as the Toyota Carina E in the European market variant, is known to be swapped with the S Engine family. Some of its appearances are in several articles and Youtube videos.

Toyota Starlet

This Starlet has a variety of engine swap options although the practical and most often done is swapping to the 4E-FTE which is the engine of the Toyota Starlet GT.

Toyota Yaris

Based on information from the international forum ‘yarisworld’, this car has been successfully swapped with 4A and 2ZZ engines.

Toyota Vios

This car has been swapped several times to the 2ZZ-GE engine, its appearance is often found on forums and Youtube. One user even managed to swap to 4AGZE (supercharger) which has been converted to turbo, but it is not recommended because of the high level of difficulty.

Toyota Corolla Altis

The swap that is often done is with 2ZZ-GE which incidentally is still in the same ZZ engine family. For more power, some have swapped to 3S-GTE but it is certain the difficulty level and of course the cost will be higher.

Toyota Camry

As a luxury sedan, the Camry certainly already has a decent amount of power. However, some people still swap their engines with one of the 3S-GTEs, which of course has more power and potential.
